current trends moving our society towards healthy lifestyles have captured the minds of many young minds. being the activists for today’s diet trends makes us revolutionaries and an inspiration to those around us. being conscious about what we put in our bodies is vital to being a healthy, functioning human being. but without the knowledge and facts, how is anyone supposed to change for the better? knowing the degree of positive impact you have on the world when making everyday choices can improve, not only your quality of life, but those around you as well.

i’m sure you’ve heard about people participating in “meatless Monday,” becoming “vegan,” or “vegetarian.” all of these trends are lifestyle choices that people make for many reasons: health, morality, environmental influences, etc. don’t get me wrong, our current health system is incredible and saves so many lives- thanks to advances in technology and highly skilled professionals at work. but the front-runners of our medical world are not required to be equipped with the knowledge of nutrition and the power it has over one’s health. by simply educating yourself and others around you, you can help change the world and its views on health.

let’s start with some facts: heart disease is the #1 killer in the US today. heart disease is a catch-all term for many diseases, but most of them relate to plaque buildup in the arteries caused by poor diet choices. if you really stop to think about this, the #1 killer of Americans today is a disease that can be avoided by simply choosing to eat healthier. look around; we are surrounded by fast food chains and cheap convenience foods, so it only makes sense people are eating themselves into illness. starting at a young age we are told cow’s milk is “good for us” and it “makes us grow big and strong”, we are given milk in school lunches for 12 years. at a young age, colorful packaging and super hero shaped cookies and fruit snacks are appealing to us. we thought pop-tarts were a balanced breakfast and a good way to start off the day. we were taught that the only sufficient way to obtain protein from your diet was to eat meat. why did we think these things? because we weren’t taught any other way, we thought this is how life is supposed to be.

cow’s milk is produced by a cow to help its calf grow into a 400lb cow (moral of the story: cow’s milk is for cows, obviously). large-scale food companies spend millions of dollars each year to advertise to children and make their packaging appeal to children so they can profit, because most children influence what their families eat. consuming meat today has its impacts and many people see these impacts mostly from scrolling through their facebook and social media feeds. it is easy to watch a video or read an article about the negative impacts of meat consumption, but actually being informed and educating yourself about the impacts your choices make on the world and your health, takes effort. putting in the effort to expand your knowledge on all aspects of health will make you more confident and comfortable with change. change is good.

i’m not here to try to convert people to veganism or make you feel like you need to change because what you’re doing is wrong (because its not, there is no right way to live). but actually letting this information resonate with you and actually doing something productive about it creates a small personal revolution. these small revolutions can impact other people’s lives and before you know it- a domino effect has played out. our current health/school system has failed many on proper nutrition education. by simply educating ourselves and taking our health into our own hands- we create many simple revolutions, and some of these can catch fire and make huge differences for generations to come.

all im saying is: let’s change the way we think about health, be conscious about what we put into our bodies. take the time to educate yourself, and grow as an intellectual human being. let’s learn and grow from each other’s experiences.

never stop learning,
madi
